Hospitalizations

The Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) were obtained from the BC Ministry of Health. A record was defined as an injury case it had both an injury diagnosis code (S00-T79) and an external cause code (V01-Y36).

Emergency Department Visits

To obtain an estimate of provincial ED visits, a ratio of ED visits to hospitalizations for injury in Ontario was applied to BC.

Deaths

Death data were obtained from BC Vital Statistics, Ministry of Health and accessed from the Chronic Disease and Injury Data Mart, BC Centre for Disease Control (as of August 6, 2021). A record was defined as an injury case if the underlying cause of death had an external cause code (V01-Y36).

Population Denominators

Population estimates by age and sex were obtained from BC Stats. See Reference Population.
